This is particularly true of families who have an individual with impairment. Clear, direct, and honest communication, active listening, and positiveness are all communication styles associated with healthy family functioning. Family functioning also benefits from collaborative problem-solving that includes shared decision-making among family members, is goal-oriented, follows concrete steps, and builds on successes (Walsh, 2003). A family’s ability and overall style of communication and problem-solving is represented by the interactions between parents and children.
